Workforce Education Initiative - 2003 - 2007

Dr. Barry Shaffer, director of Adult Education for the state of Minnesota, led a three-year initiative to build capacity and quality in Adult Basic Education's workforce education programs throughout the state.  Educators from around Minnesota came together over the last 3 years to receive training and learn from each other.  To find the workforce education provider nearest you, contact anne.leland@state.mn.us

Over the course of the project, 157 separate businesses hosted on-site classes in the workplace.  84% of the classes were English as a Second Language (ESL); 16 % were basic skills or GED preparation.  Following is a list of the types of businesses served:

  • agriculture
  • auto repair and maintenance
  • banking
  • casino
  • child care
  • food processing
  • health care
  • hotel
  • manufacturing
  • military
  • printing
  • restaurant
  • retail
  • transportation

Near the end of the project, a number of the project leaders presented project information to the Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE).  The presentation is attached:
